Music of the London Spanish-Jewish Community

The following two sites are dedicated to the melodies of the Spanish-Portuguese tradition in London. The Spanish-Portuguese Jewish community emerged in England after the tumultous period of civil wars in the 1640s-1650.

The Roundhead leader, Oliver Cromwell allowed former Conversos to settle openly in large part because of the efforts of Rabbi Manasseh ben Israel, a former Converso himself, who was part of the famed Amsterdam community.

The tradition of the Spanish-Portuguese is in many ways unusual and certainly different from the Judeo-Spanish tradition.

During the high holidays, I try to incorporate at least some of these melodies into services.
